National Mind produces a series of 'Rights Guides' (£1 each + p&p) to help patients, relatives and professionals understand the Mental Health Act. A useful booklet called 'The Mental Health Act 1983 - An Outline Guide' is also available (£1 + p&p). You can buy these mail order from Mind Publications, they are also available to read and print off on Mind's website: www.mind.org.uk.
For further information on the Act, you can also contact the Mind Legal Advice Service on 0845 225 9393, Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; or you will be able to find out more about your rights from one of the organisations listed under Legal Help, or one of the general mental health helplines listed under Helplines & Telephone Counselling, or by speaking to a mental health advocate from one of the organisations listed under Mental Health Advocacy. Copies of the 1983 and 2007 Acts themselves can be purchased from specialist legal bookshops, and online from The Stationery Office: www.tsoshop.co.uk.
